Ommwriter: The Best Distraction Free Writing Software You Have Never Heard Off
While no piece of software can help you churn out a story or a novel if you don’t have it in you, there are services which can help you create an environment where your writing can flow naturally. Today, the biggest hurdle which a writer has to face are the multitudes of things around him/her which are constantly trying to distract him. Even the machine a writer uses to get the writing done can act as a portal to the world of distractions. While we can go back the old route and use a pen and paper, most of us will not be able to finish even a page before our hands start betraying us. What we need is something which can kill all the distractions and provide us with a place to write and for me, Ommwriter provides me that distraction-free place.
I don’t know how and when I discovered this software but I am happy that I did. This is the best writing software I have ever landed my hands on. When I first found this software, I was on the fence for so many days before I finally decided to buy it. That was because when I was trying this one out, I could only see the missing features and not see far enough to realise that Ommwriter was missing those features for a reason. It was intentional and by design. When you launch the app, the only thing you see is a blank sheet of coloured paper with a blinking cursor at the top. It confused the hell out me, after all, there was no way to create a document, no formatting option, nothing at all. But, when I really started using it, I realised that I don’t need those features, they are just a way to distract my mind away from something which is the only thing that matters; Writing. Look at the picture below to understand what I am saying.
Yes, that’s the dreaded blank page which we all stare at some point in time in our lives. I really love this quote from Gene Fowler which sums this up perfectly,
“Writing is easy: All you do is sit staring at a blank sheet of paper until drops of blood form on your forehead.”
That’s a really powerful quote if you ask me. There’s a similar one from Ernest Hemingway which goes like this,
“There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.”
Now, both the quotes have very different meanings, but I hope I am making my point clear. Well, coming back to Ommwriter, it gives you that blank page along with that blinking cursor. Now what you ask? Well, now you start typing. The best part is that when you launch the app, it automatically goes to full-screen and doesn’t even have a window mode. This means that when you launch the app, you know you are doing it because you want to right. A quick discloser here, I have been testing this app on my MacBook Pro so I don’t know how it behaves on Windows, but I assume everything I say here will apply for the Windows version too.
With that out of the way, let’s take a look at some of the extra features that Ommwriter has to offer us. Firstly, there are a few fonts types which you can choose from. The choices are limited, but I have a feeling that the developers did this to minimise the choices. You will see the same theme repeating here. I love that we can change the page background. The picture above shows my favourite background but there are many more to choose from. The app also comes with various background sounds to help you concentrate and get in the zone. I don’t use that feature as I work best in silence, but you can give it a try if you like that. All these are good but they are not my favourite features. My favourite feature is the sound that the app makes when you hit a keystroke. There are a lot of variations to choose from, and I love all of them. I can’t describe it to you, but the sound makes every keystroke feel beautiful and you will feel joy of typing.
All these features make typing and writing on Ommwriter a joyous ride. The distraction-free atmosphere gives you brain ample time to bring out its creativity and the writing just flows once you find your groove. However, not everything will sit well with everyone here. Since there is no organisational structure inside the app, you will need a separate app to organise your material. I recommend Scrivener if you are planning to write a novel or any kind of long-form writing for that matter and Ulysses for organizing blog posts. If you want an in-depth look at any of the two software I just mentioned, let me know in the comments section below.
Let’s bring this back to a conclusion, shall we? Ommwriter is the best distraction-free writing software you can use. It’s available for both Windows and macOS. It makes writing feel a little better than it actually is. It won’t make you a better writer, but it will give you tools to help you along your journey. I have linked a video below so you can take a look at its interface. I would also recommend that you try it out for yourself. Click on the link below to do that.
