Apple Just Killed Its Affiliate Program: What’s Next?

Apple Just Killed Its Affiliate Program: What’s Next?

This news is now a few days old and you all must have read it by now. I wanted to write about this as soon as I received the email but I didn’t know what to say. It’s been almost 10 months since I started this website and thanks to our readers, it's going great. Just last month we crossed the 10,000 unique visitors per month threshold and I was elated.

If you are a recurring reader of the website you know that I am against any and all form of ads as they just mess up with the reading experience. At the same time, I also need money to keep the website running. For generating income for the website without the use of ads, I used four different methods. The first two are the affiliate programs from Amazon and Apple. As mentioned at the end of all my articles, all the links on this website are affiliated and anything that you purchase using the links on the website generates an income for it.

You will also see that there are two buttons at the end of every article. Well, the buttons take you to donation websites. The first one which reads “Buy me a coffee” is a link to a service which lets readers donate a one time amount. The minimum is $3 but you can donate how much ever you want. The second button which reads “Become a patron” takes you to the Patreon’s website where you can become a recurring donator for the website which means that you can pledge a monthly donation amount. There are also some perks for users who want to join the recurring donation program using Patreon.

“I also tried to get sponsors for the website, however, the efforts have still not met with any success. If some of you remember the “sponsored by” tag at the top of the website, it was just me testing how the links were performing so I can form better proposals for future sponsors."

Coming back to the point, the four methods that I have employed till now include the affiliate programs for Apple and Amazon and the two donation programs. Quite frankly, the donations program haven’t been a success at all as the first one has just received $9 in donations so far while the Patreon website has only one monthly donator. Needless to say, the Apple and Amazon’s affiliate programs are the only ones generating income which help me bear the cost of the website. Although, I was and am not generating any income which is more than what’s needed to run the website, being able to earn enough so that the website remains alive was a good feeling. Sadly, now that Apple has decided to kill its affiliate program (it will go offline from 1st October), I really have no idea what I am going to do.

The only thing that comes to my mind is to put ads on my website which I wholeheartedly don’t want to do. But, if that’s the thing which can keep the website running, I don’t think I have any other choice. The sad part is that I don’t know whether the ads will generate sufficient income or not. Well, I have two months to research and decide. In the meanwhile, I will also try my best to get some real sponsors and hopefully that will be enough to keep this website running.  The news from Apple is certainly a big blow to my plans and I am still not sure what to do.

If you have ever wanted to support this website, this is probably the right time to do so. You can find the donation button below and hopefully, you guys will be able to keep the website alive and ad-free.
